Others mean the fridge is already losing cooling and your food is at risk. This guide explains what each code points to, what is safe to try yourself, and the point at which guessing starts costing you money.

What Samsung Error Codes Actually Mean
Samsung refrigerators run a continuous self diagnostic routine. Sensors, fans, heaters and control boards all report back to the main board, and when one of them stops responding, responds with a value outside its expected range, or fails to produce the result the board asked for, the board displays a code.
That is a useful distinction to hold onto. The code identifies where the reporting broke down, not necessarily which part has failed. A fan error code can mean the fan motor has died, or it can mean ice has jammed the fan blade, or it can mean the wire feeding the fan has chafed through. All three produce the same code and all three need different repairs. This is the single biggest reason people replace the wrong part.
You will see codes written with two different letter suffixes. On most Samsung refrigerators, codes ending in E are the traditional error format used across French door, side by side, top mount and bottom mount models. Codes ending in C appear on newer platforms including Family Hub and some Bespoke units, and generally indicate the same fault families. Where both exist, such as 22E and 22C, they point to the same underlying component.
Codes are also model and generation specific. The same two characters can mean slightly different things on a 2014 side by side and a 2024 four door flex, which is why any error code list, including this one, should be treated as a guide to the fault area rather than a definitive instruction for your exact unit. Your model number resolves that ambiguity, and it is printed on a label inside the fridge compartment, usually on the side wall or above the crisper drawers.
Read This Before You Reset Anything
Almost every article about Samsung error codes opens by telling you to unplug the fridge. Samsung’s own support documentation says something different, and it is worth understanding why.
Samsung advises that unless you have been specifically instructed to do so, you should avoid unplugging the refrigerator or pressing buttons on the control panel to try to clear an error code, because doing so can make it harder for a technician to accurately diagnose the fault.
Here is the practical reason. When your fridge throws a code, it has captured a fault state. A technician can retrieve that state, along with related stored data, and use it to narrow the diagnosis quickly. Wipe it with repeated power cycles and that evidence is gone. The fridge then has to reproduce the fault while the technician is standing there, which on an intermittent fault might not happen at all. You have not fixed anything. You have made the problem harder to find, and a harder diagnosis takes longer.
A sensible middle ground:
- One power cycle is reasonable if the display is showing something that is not a genuine fault, such as a power reset indication after a blackout, or if the fridge appears completely dead and you want to rule out a supply issue.
- Repeated power cycles are not a fix. If a code clears and comes back, the fault is in hardware. Every reset after the first one is delaying a repair while the underlying problem gets worse.
- If the fridge is still cooling and you have already booked a technician, leave it alone. The code is more useful to us than a blank display.
Power and Voltage Codes
88 88 or 8 8
This is the code people panic about most, and it is frequently not a fault at all.
A display showing 88 88 or all segments illuminated usually indicates the control board has restarted, most often after a power interruption, a brownout, a storm, or a switchboard event. Sydney gets plenty of all four. In many cases the fridge is still cooling normally underneath the display.
What to do: Turn the fridge off at the wall or at the circuit breaker, wait one minute, and switch it back on. If the display returns to normal temperatures and the fridge continues cooling, that was the end of it. If 88 88 returns, or if it returns repeatedly over the following days, the board is no longer holding a stable state and that needs diagnosis. Repeated appearance after storms often means surge damage has already occurred.
83 E, 85 E, 86 E and 85 C
These relate to the power side of the appliance rather than the refrigeration side. Samsung documents 85C specifically as a low voltage warning, typically triggered by a brief outage or a voltage drop.
On models with an inverter compressor, codes in this range can also indicate a fault on the inverter drive board, the board that controls compressor speed. This matters because an inverter fault presents almost identically to a dead compressor from the outside. The fridge does not cool, the compressor does not run, and an inexperienced repairer quotes a compressor replacement. Testing the drive output first is the difference between a board repair and an unnecessary sealed system job.
What to do: If the code followed a known outage and clears on its own, monitor it. If it persists, or if the fridge is not cooling, book a technician. Do not keep power cycling a unit that is throwing power side codes.

84 C
Compressor lock. The compressor is not starting when commanded. On inverter models this is often the drive board rather than the compressor itself, and it needs proper electrical testing before anything is condemned. This code means the fridge is not cooling. Treat it as urgent.
Communication Codes
PC ER and PC CH
These indicate the display panel and the main control board have stopped talking to each other properly.
In our experience the most common physical cause is not a failed board at all. It is the wiring harness that runs through the door hinge. Every time the door opens and closes, that harness flexes. Over years and tens of thousands of cycles, the insulation wears and a conductor eventually breaks or shorts intermittently. A loose or corroded connector behind the display produces the same symptom.
The important consequence is that the main board may lose accurate temperature data while the compressor keeps running normally. The fridge looks fine and can still be sitting at an unsafe temperature. Do not assume a communication code is cosmetic.
Diagnosis order that saves money: harness continuity first, connectors second, display board third, main board last. Boards are the expensive part and the most commonly replaced unnecessarily. We do not condemn a board until the wiring is proven sound.

41 E, 42 E and 43 E
Board to board or board to panel communication faults. Same diagnostic logic as PC ER: prove the wiring before replacing electronics.
41 or 42 with flashing blue lights, and 41 C
On Family Hub models these indicate a software or system level issue rather than a refrigeration fault. Samsung’s guidance is to reboot the unit using the door switch on the top right, and to check for available updates where the code relates to an update failure.
This is worth stating plainly, because it affects what you should pay for. If the fault is genuinely confined to the Family Hub screen, its software or your SmartThings account, that is a Samsung matter and not a refrigeration repair. We will tell you when that is the case rather than charge you for a visit that cannot fix it. Where the refrigeration side is at fault and the screen is simply reporting it, that is our work.
Sensor Codes
1 E, 2 E, 4 E, 5 E and 6 E
Samsung fridges use thermistors, small temperature sensors whose electrical resistance changes predictably with temperature. The control board reads that resistance and decides when to run the compressor, when to open the damper and when to start a defrost cycle.
- 1 E points to the fridge compartment sensor
- 2 E points to the freezer compartment sensor
- 4 E points to the freezer defrost sensor
- 5 E points to the fridge defrost sensor
- 6 E points to the ambient or external sensor
Sensors fail in two ways, and the difference matters. An open circuit sensor fails loudly and generates a code straight away. A drifted sensor fails quietly. It still reports a value, so no code appears, but the value is wrong, and the board acts on bad information. That is why a fridge can freeze the lettuce in the crisper or run warm with no error code showing at all. Sensors are inexpensive parts, which is precisely why they should be measured against the manufacturer’s resistance curve rather than swapped speculatively.
Sensor codes very often appear immediately after a power outage. That is not coincidence. The reset makes the board re-evaluate every input at once, and a sensor that has been marginal for months finally gets flagged.
Why 5 E deserves particular attention. The fridge defrost sensor tells the board when to stop the defrost heater. If it fails, the defrost cycle stops working correctly, frost builds progressively on the evaporator coil, and airflow is choked off. The fridge does not fail immediately. It gets slowly worse over days or weeks, usually with the classic pattern of a freezer that stays cold while the fridge section drifts warm. Left alone, it stops cooling entirely.
Fan Codes
21 E, 22 E and 22 C
21 E is the freezer fan. 22 E and 22 C are the fridge fan. Samsung’s own troubleshooting notes that these can be triggered by a fan issue or by a door that has been left open.
That second cause explains a lot of the calls we take. A door left ajar, or a gasket that no longer seals, lets warm humid Sydney air into the cabinet continuously. That moisture condenses on the coldest surface and freezes. Eventually the ice reaches the fan blade, the fan stalls or slows, and the board flags a fan error. The fan itself is often perfectly good.
What you can safely try: If the code appeared after a door was left open, a full defrost may resolve it. Empty the fridge, move perishables to an esky, switch the unit off at the wall and leave the doors open for several hours with towels down to catch meltwater. Never chip at ice with a knife or screwdriver. The evaporator tubing sits directly behind that ice, and puncturing it turns a fan repair into a sealed system repair.
If the code returns after a full defrost, stop. That means the fan motor, the wiring, the door switch or the defrost circuit has genuinely failed, and continuing to defrost it manually every fortnight is not a solution.
23 E
Condenser fan fault. The condenser fan rejects heat from the system to the outside air. When it stops, the compressor runs longer and hotter to achieve nothing, cooling declines, and compressor life shortens measurably.
This one is worth catching quickly because the fix is usually inexpensive and the consequence of ignoring it is not. A fridge that runs continuously is the best single predictor of a future compressor failure, which we explain in more detail in our guide to why a fridge runs constantly.
Defrost Codes
24 E and 25 E
The defrost cycle has failed to complete correctly. Suspects are the defrost heater, the defrost sensor or thermal fuse, and the board output that triggers the cycle.
Defrost faults are progressive, which makes them different from most other refrigeration failures. Every cooling cycle deposits more ice on the evaporator. Every millimetre of ice further restricts airflow. Cooling declines a little more, which means the compressor runs longer, which means more ice. A fridge that is slightly warm today will typically stop cooling altogether within weeks, not months.
The tell tale sign is a fridge that improves temporarily after you manually defrost it and then degrades again. If you are doing that regularly, you are managing a fault rather than fixing it.
Ice Compartment Codes
Codes including 8 E, 14 E, 33 E, 39 E, 39 C, 40 E and 40 C relate to the ice compartment: its sensors, its fill tube heater, its fan and its function.
Samsung owners report ice related faults more than any other category. On the units we attend, the underlying cause is very often refrigeration rather than the ice mechanism itself. Ice builds where it should not because the defrost circuit is failing or a drain has blocked, and that ice then obstructs the fan or the mechanism in the ice compartment. Fix the defrost fault and the ice compartment problem frequently resolves with it.
A clear note on our scope. Codes That Are Not Faults
Three displays send people looking for a repairer when nothing is broken.
OF OF, O FF or OFF OFF
This is Cooling Off mode, also called Demo mode or Shop mode. It exists so retailers can display a fridge on a shop floor with the lights and panel working while the compressor stays off. In this mode the fridge looks completely alive. The interior lights come on, the display is lit, the panel responds. It simply does not cool.
It gets activated accidentally more often than you would think. A cloth wiped across a touch panel, someone leaning against the display, a child pressing buttons, or a unit delivered from a showroom without the mode being cleared.
How to exit it. The button combination varies significantly between models, so there is no single sequence that works on every Samsung fridge, and this is one place where guessing wastes time. Samsung’s own instructions use positional language: press and hold the first and second buttons on the panel at the same time until you hear a chime, and if the display does not change, press and hold the first, second and fourth buttons together until you hear a chime.
Specific families differ. Some side by side models require Fridge and Power Cool held together for six seconds, followed by pressing Lock when the display blinks. Bespoke models use the arrow buttons held together for six seconds followed by the O button. Convertible models use Temp, Power Freeze and Lock together. On Family Hub units, open the Fridge Manager app on the screen, go to Fridge Settings, select Cooling Off, then choose Deactivate and confirm.
Check the button map in your user manual or on Samsung’s support site for your specific model number before pressing anything. When the mode disengages, OF OF disappears within a few seconds and the fridge begins cooling.
If you have run the correct sequence for your model, the display has returned to normal temperatures, and the fridge still is not cooling after a couple of hours, it is not a mode problem. That is a genuine refrigeration fault and it needs a technician.
AP
Access point mode. The fridge is in Wi-Fi setup for SmartThings. It disappears once setup completes or times out. Nothing is wrong.
76 C
Moisture detected in the Autofill compartment. Dry it out. Samsung notes no service is required unless it keeps recurring.
dE and dU
Door open or door alignment. Check that nothing is obstructing the door, that door bins are not overloaded and distorting the door, and that the fridge is sitting level. If the doors are closing properly and the code persists, the door switch, hinge or gasket needs attention. A gasket that no longer seals is effectively a door left slightly open all day, and it drives frost buildup, higher running costs and eventually a defrost fault.
What You Can Safely Do Yourself
Keep this list short and stop when you reach the end of it.
- Note the exact code and when it appears. Photograph the display. Whether it is constant or intermittent is genuinely useful diagnostic information.
- Check the doors. Confirm both doors are closing fully, nothing is obstructing them, and no bin is loaded so heavily it distorts the door. Run the paper test: close the door on a sheet of paper and pull it out. Weak resistance anywhere along the perimeter means air is getting in there.
- Rule out Cooling Off mode if the display shows OF OF and the fridge is not cooling.
- One power cycle, if the code appeared after a blackout or the fridge appears dead. One, not five.
- Check the condenser. If it is accessible at the rear or beneath the unit, dust, lint and pet hair form an insulating blanket over the coil that forces the compressor to work harder for the same result. Cleaning it addresses a genuinely large share of the cooling complaints we attend.
- Check ventilation clearance. A fridge pushed hard against a wall, boxed into tight joinery or sitting in a hot garage cannot reject heat properly. No repair holds if the condenser cannot breathe.
What not to do
- Do not chip ice off the evaporator with anything sharp. Refrigerant tubing sits directly behind it.
- Do not keep resetting a code that keeps returning. You are erasing diagnostic data and delaying the repair.
- Do not attempt anything behind the rear interior panel unless you are qualified. There is live wiring and there is refrigerant tubing.
- Do not let anyone add gas as a first response to poor cooling. Refrigerant does not get used up. If a system is low, there is a leak, and topping it up without finding the leak wastes the gas and leaves you with the same fault. - Do not order parts based on a code alone. The code names the fault area, not the failed component.
When to Call a Fridge Technician
Call now, without troubleshooting first, if any of these apply:
- The fridge is not cooling at all and you have confirmed it is not in Cooling Off mode
- The freezer compartment is thawing
- There is a burning smell, visible scorching, or the fridge is tripping the circuit breaker or safety switch
- The compressor clicks repeatedly and then falls silent, which can indicate a relay or inverter fault and where repeated failed start attempts risk damaging the compressor windings
- You are storing temperature sensitive stock, medication or vaccines
- It is a commercial kitchen and the unit holds trading stock
Book a technician promptly, within a day or two, if:
- A code clears on a power cycle and then comes back
- The freezer stays cold while the fridge section drifts warm
- Frost is visibly building on the rear interior panel
- Water is appearing under the crisper drawers or pooling on the floor
- You are getting sensor, fan or defrost codes of any kind
- The fridge is running continuously and the power bill has climbed
- A fan or defrost code has returned after you already performed a full manual defrost
It is reasonable to monitor if:
- The display showed 88 88 after a known blackout, cleared with one power cycle, and the fridge is cooling normally
- The code was AP or 76 C
- OF OF cleared correctly and the fridge is now cooling
The underlying principle: codes involving fans, defrost, sensors and boards all share a characteristic. They get worse, and they get worse in a way that pushes the compressor harder. A fan motor, a defrost heater, a sensor or a gasket are modest repairs. A compressor is not. The gap between those two numbers is what you are protecting by calling early, and it is the reason we would rather see a fridge in week one than week six.
Food Safety While You Wait
If cooling has been affected, the appliance is only part of the problem.
Keep the doors closed as much as possible. A full fridge holds temperature considerably longer than an empty one. If the fridge has been above 5 degrees for more than a couple of hours, move perishables into an esky with ice bricks. Meat, seafood, dairy and cooked leftovers are the first concerns.
The general food safety guidance in Australia is the two hour and four hour rule for potentially hazardous food held between 5 and 60 degrees. Under two hours, refrigerate and use. Between two and four hours, use immediately rather than putting it back. Beyond four hours, discard it. When you are genuinely unsure how long something has been warm, throw it out. It costs less than the alternative.
Frozen food that still contains ice crystals and feels firm can generally be refrozen. Food that has fully thawed and warmed should not be.
What to Have Ready When You Call
Having these to hand shortens the diagnosis and often means the right part is on the van:
- The model number, from the label inside the fridge compartment
- The exact code and whether it is constant or intermittent
- When it started, and whether it followed a storm, blackout or a door being left open
- What the fridge is actually doing: is the freezer still cold, is the fridge side warm, can you hear fans running, is the compressor running
- Whether frost or ice is visible on the rear interior panel
- Whether you have already defrosted it, and whether that helped temporarily
- The approximate age of the appliance
