Smeg Refrigerator Repairs Across Sydney

A Smeg refrigerator should not be diagnosed from the badge alone.

The Smeg range includes very different refrigerator designs. A single-door FAB model with an internal freezer does not use exactly the same cooling and defrost arrangement as a modern bottom-mount Total No Frost fridge, and an integrated model creates different access and ventilation considerations again.

That is why we start with the symptoms and model rather than assuming every Smeg cooling problem has the same cause.

Our technicians can investigate problems involving:

  • poor or uneven cooling
  • freezer not freezing
  • excessive frost or ice
  • refrigerator running constantly
  • water leaks
  • noisy fans
  • door-sealing problems
  • temperature alarms
  • sensors and electronic controls
  • compressor and sealed-system faults

Free quotes are available over the phone based on the information you provide.

Which Type of Smeg Fridge Do You Have?

Knowing the refrigerator type helps narrow down the correct diagnostic path.

Smeg FAB28 Single-Door Refrigerators

The FAB28 is one of Smeg's best-known 50's Style refrigerator designs.

Current Australian FAB28 models are fan-assisted single-door refrigerators with an internal freezer compartment. They use automatic defrost in the refrigerator section, while the internal freezer requires manual defrosting. Current models also use MultiFlow, electronic temperature control and an inverter compressor.

Problems worth investigating include: fresh-food compartment too warm, excessive freezer frost, fan noise, temperature instability, door not sealing, and compressor running excessively.

Smeg FAB32 and FAB38 Bottom-Mount Fridges

The FAB32 and FAB38 use a different arrangement, with the refrigerator above and freezer below.

Current Australian versions use Total No Frost cooling, MultiFlow and fan-assisted air circulation, along with Double Cooling on current models. Heavy or recurring ice in one of these models should therefore not simply be dismissed as normal freezer frost.

Diagnosis may involve: evaporator airflow, fan operation, defrost components, temperature sensors, electronic controls, door sealing, compressor performance and the refrigeration circuit.

Smeg FAB50 Double-Door Fridges

The FAB50 is a larger double-door 50's Style refrigerator rather than a FAB28-style single-door cabinet. Current Australian FAB50 models use Total No Frost with Double Cooling.

Cooling problems should therefore be assessed according to that design rather than using generic advice intended for older manual-defrost refrigerators.

Smeg Portofino Fridge-Freezers

Smeg's Portofino FA490 range includes freestanding bottom-mount refrigerators. Current Australian FA490 models use automatic defrost and Total No Frost Double Cooling.

Possible complaints include: fridge or freezer temperature problems, fan noise, icing, door-seal faults, sensor problems and continuous running.

Smeg Integrated Refrigerators

Smeg also sells built-in refrigeration, including current single-door and bottom-mount configurations such as SABI models.

Integrated refrigerators require additional care because cooling performance can also be affected by ventilation around the appliance, cabinetry clearances, door alignment and installation. Access varies depending on cabinetry.

Common Smeg Fridge Problems We Diagnose

Smeg Fridge Not Cooling

If a Smeg refrigerator is running but not reaching temperature, possible areas to investigate include evaporator fan, airflow, temperature sensor or thermistor, control board, condenser condition, compressor, refrigeration circuit and door sealing.

A refrigerator that is completely warm requires a different diagnostic approach from one where the freezer remains cold.

Freezer Cold but Smeg Fridge Warm

When the freezer is still cold but the refrigerator section is warming, airflow becomes particularly important.

Possible causes include evaporator fan not operating correctly, excessive evaporator ice, airflow restriction, sensor fault, electronic control problem, or defrost-system failure.

Smeg Fridge Icing Up

The first question is which Smeg model you have. For example, the internal freezer in a current FAB28 is manually defrosted, whereas current FAB32 and FAB38 bottom-mount fridges use Total No Frost.

Abnormal icing can be associated with a damaged door seal, door left slightly open, defrost fault, sensor problem, airflow restriction, fan obstruction or drainage issue.

Smeg Fridge Running Constantly

Long compressor run times do not automatically mean the compressor has failed. Possible causes include poor door sealing, frequent door opening, warm food load, restricted ventilation, dirty condenser area, sensor or temperature-control problem, refrigeration-system performance issue, or high surrounding temperature.

Modern Smeg refrigerators may also use inverter compressors.

Smeg Fridge Leaking Water

Where the water appears can help narrow down the fault. Water inside or underneath a refrigerator may be related to blocked or restricted drainage, defrost water not draining correctly, condensation, excessive frost melting, damaged door sealing, or water-system components.

Smeg Fridge Freezing Food

Food freezing in the fresh-food compartment may point towards incorrect temperature setting, food positioned against a cold-air outlet, faulty temperature sensor, thermostat problem, airflow-control issue or electronic control fault.

Smeg Fridge Making Noise

New or unusually loud sounds deserve investigation, particularly scraping, grinding, repeated clicking, rattling or unusually loud fan noise.

Possible causes include evaporator fan contacting ice, worn fan motor, loose component, compressor or start-component problem, cabinet vibration, or refrigerator not sitting level.

Smeg Fridge Door Not Sealing

Before replacing the gasket, we consider the whole door. Possible causes include damaged or distorted gasket, food preventing closure, dirty sealing surface, door misalignment, hinge movement, or ice around the opening.

With FAB refrigerators, care should also be taken around the distinctive exterior finish and chrome hardware.

Smeg Temperature or Door Alarm

An alarm may follow door left open, recent warm food loading, rising cabinet temperature, door not sealing, cooling fault, or sensor/electronic-control problem. Check that doors are properly closed first.

Smeg Components We Check

The components involved depend on the model and symptoms, but diagnosis may include:

  • Evaporator and Evaporator Fan: Responsible for absorbing heat and circulating cooled air on applicable models.
  • Temperature Sensors and Thermistors: Provide temperature information to the refrigerator's electronic controls.
  • Defrost System: On automatic-defrost models this can include the heater, sensors and control logic used to manage evaporator frost.
  • Door Gaskets: Maintain the seal between the refrigerated compartment and the surrounding room.
  • Electronic Control Board: Coordinates temperature control, compressor operation, fans, alarms and other functions depending on model.
  • Inverter Compressor and Controls: Current Smeg refrigeration includes inverter-compressor models. Diagnosis should distinguish a compressor fault from sensor, control, power or airflow problems.
  • Drainage: Defrost water must be able to leave the evaporator area correctly.
  • Refrigeration Circuit: Includes components such as the compressor, condenser, evaporator, filter drier, tubing and metering system.

Does a Smeg Fridge Need Regassing? Poor cooling does not automatically mean a Smeg refrigerator needs gas. Refrigerant is contained within a sealed circuit and should not normally disappear through everyday use. If testing indicates low refrigerant charge, the underlying reason needs investigation. Fast Fridge Repairs is ARCtick licensed for applicable refrigeration work.

Find Your Smeg Model Number Before Booking

Providing the product code and serial number can make the service discussion much more useful. Smeg Australia says refrigerator and freezer identification labels are located inside the appliance on the left side.

When you call, it helps to provide: model/product code, serial number if available, whether the freezer is still cold, whether you can see frost or ice, where water is appearing, and any alarm or unusual noise.

Is Your Smeg Fridge Still Under Manufacturer Warranty?

If your refrigerator may still be covered by Smeg's manufacturer warranty, check your proof of purchase and warranty conditions before arranging an independent repair. Smeg Australia's current warranty conditions include specific coverage for major appliances and state that manufacturer warranty coverage can be affected where a product has been dismantled, repaired or serviced by someone other than an authorised Smeg employee or agent.

Fast Fridge Repairs is an independent refrigeration repair business and is not represented as an authorised Smeg service agent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you repair Smeg FAB fridges?

Yes. Fast Fridge Repairs can diagnose faults affecting Smeg FAB refrigerators, including cooling problems, excessive frost, fan faults, door-sealing issues, sensors, controls and refrigeration-system problems.

Why is my Smeg fridge not cooling?

Possible causes include an airflow or fan problem, temperature sensor, electronic control, door seal, compressor or sealed-system fault. The symptoms and refrigerator model determine what needs testing.

Why is my Smeg FAB fridge icing up?

It depends on the model. Current FAB28 refrigerators have a manually defrosted internal freezer, while current FAB32 and FAB38 models use Total No Frost systems. Persistent or abnormal ice on a No Frost model may indicate a sealing, airflow or defrost problem.

Why is my Smeg fridge running all the time?

Check the door is closing correctly and that ventilation around the refrigerator is not obstructed. Temperature-control, airflow and refrigeration-system faults can also cause long run times.

Do you repair integrated Smeg refrigerators?

Integrated Smeg refrigeration can be assessed for cooling, fan, sensor, defrost, control and sealing problems. Access requirements depend on how the appliance has been installed within the cabinetry.

Does my Smeg fridge need regassing?

Not necessarily. Poor cooling can have many causes. If refrigerant is found to be low, the reason for the loss should be investigated rather than simply adding more refrigerant.

Where is the Smeg fridge model number?

Smeg Australia states that the product-code and serial-number label for refrigerators and freezers is inside the appliance on the left-hand side.

Should I repair an older Smeg fridge or replace it?

It depends on the fault, refrigerator condition, age, parts availability and cost of repair compared with replacement. A fan, gasket, sensor or drainage fault creates a very different decision from a major sealed-system problem.

Do you offer same-day Smeg fridge repairs?

Same-day appointments are available across Sydney where technician scheduling allows.

Do you offer after-hours Smeg fridge repairs?

Yes. Fast Fridge Repairs is open 24 hours and after-hours service is available for urgent refrigeration problems.
