What Is an Upright Fridge?
An upright fridge is any refrigerator built in a tall vertical cabinet with front opening doors, as opposed to a chest, underbench, or counter style unit. The term describes the shape of the cabinet, not the market it was built for. Both households and businesses use upright fridges, but the two are engineered very differently, and that difference matters enormously when something goes wrong.
Residential Upright Fridges
Built for intermittent door openings in a climate controlled home. They prioritise quiet running, energy efficiency and presentation, with crisper drawers, interior compartments, adjustable shelving and, on many models, an ice maker or water dispenser.
Commercial Upright Fridges
Built for constant door traffic and high ambient kitchen heat. They use heavier duty compressors, fan forced cooling for fast temperature recovery, stainless steel or reinforced glass exteriors, and a stripped back interior of shelving only so bulk stock fits. They are louder and draw more power than a domestic unit, which is exactly why a commercial upright installed in a home rarely works out well.
Because the engineering is different, the failure modes are different too. A domestic upright that stops cooling is usually a defrost or airflow problem. A commercial upright that stops cooling is more often a heat rejection problem caused by a grease loaded condenser in a hot kitchen. We approach the two differently from the moment we walk in.

Common Upright Fridge Problems We Fix
1 Upright fridge not cooling but freezer still works
On a tall upright with a single evaporator, cold air is generated in the freezer section and pushed down into the fridge cavity by an evaporator fan. If the fan seizes or the air duct ices over, the freezer stays cold while the fridge section climbs. This is the single most common upright fridge complaint we attend in Sydney, and it is usually a fan motor, defrost heater or defrost thermostat fault rather than gas.
2 Whole cabinet running warm
A warm upright from top to bottom points to a heat rejection or sealed system issue: a clogged condenser coil, a failed condenser fan, low refrigerant from a leak, or a compressor that is running without pumping. On commercial uprights in Sydney kitchens, a grease and dust loaded condenser is the leading cause and is often preventable.
3 Heavy ice build up in an upright freezer
Frost sheeting the back wall or the shelves of an upright freezer indicates a failed defrost cycle, a torn gasket letting humid air in, or a door that is not sealing at the top corner. Upright freezers ice up faster than chest freezers because cold air spills out every time the door opens.
4 Water pooling under the crisper or on the floor
Blocked condensate drains are the classic upright fault. Melt water from the defrost cycle backs up, freezes in the drain channel, then overflows into the base of the cabinet or out onto the floor. We clear the drain, check the drain heater where fitted, and confirm the tray and evaporation loop are working.
5 Door seals, alignment and hinge wear
Upright doors are tall and heavy, so the load on the hinges is significant. Over years of use, cam lift hinges wear and the door sits low, opening a gap at the top of the seal. The compressor then runs almost constantly. We replace magnetic gaskets, adjust and replace hinges, and realign self closing doors on commercial uprights.
6 Compressor, relay and start capacitor failure
A compressor that hums and cuts out, clicks repeatedly, or runs without cooling usually means a failed start relay, overload protector or capacitor, all of which are far cheaper to replace than the compressor itself. Correct diagnosis here is the difference between a modest repair bill and an unnecessary new fridge.
7 Digital controller and temperature probe faults
Commercial uprights rely on a digital controller reading a probe. When the probe drifts or fails, the controller either short cycles the compressor or stops calling for cooling entirely, and the display lies to you about the real cabinet temperature. We test probes against calibrated instruments rather than trusting the panel.
8 Noise, rattling and vibration
Buzzing, knocking or rattling from an upright fridge normally traces to a worn evaporator or condenser fan bearing, loose fan shroud, failed compressor mounts, or an unlevel cabinet. Left alone, a failing fan becomes a cooling failure.
9 Lighting, wiring and control panel faults
Interior LED failures, faulty door switches that leave the light on and heat the cabinet, and control board faults on newer upright models. We repair these without needing to replace the whole unit in most cases.
Upright Fridge Temperature Standards in NSW
If your upright fridge cannot hold temperature reliably, it is more than an inconvenience. For food businesses it is a compliance issue.
- Commercial fridges: 5°C or below. Under NSW Food Authority guidance, potentially hazardous food must be kept at or below 5°C. Bacteria multiply fastest between 5°C and 60°C, the temperature danger zone.
- Commercial freezers: -18°C or below. Frozen stock must stay frozen hard to remain safe for storage and sale.
- Home upright fridges: Aim for 3°C to 4°C in the fridge section and -18°C in the freezer.
